Google announced on April 21 that the Shopping tab in US search results will consist mostly of free product listings, and the change is rolling out now. Any retailer with a Google Merchant Center account, a verified website and a compliant product feed can appear without paying per click. The work is in the feed: the attributes, the data quality and the ongoing maintenance that keep products approved. This guide walks through setup for stores on Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento and custom platforms.
Free Google Shopping listings: feed setup for every retailer
Google is making the Shopping tab mostly free in the US. Here is how to set up Merchant Center, build a feed that passes review and keep listings live.
Overview
What changed and what did not
Web & Commerce · 2020
Since 2012, Google Shopping has been entirely paid. Appearing in the Shopping tab meant running Shopping campaigns in Google Ads. The April announcement reverses that for the Shopping tab in the US: organic product listings will make up the bulk of results, with paid ads retained in slots at the top and bottom.
What stays the same:
- Paid Shopping ads still run in the main search results page, where most shopping traffic originates.
- Product data still comes from Merchant Center, with the same attributes and policies.
- Merchant Center policies, including misrepresentation and website requirements, still apply to free listings and can suspend an account.
What is new:
- A "surfaces across Google" program in Merchant Center that opts your products into free placements, including the Shopping tab, Google Images and, where eligible, Google Search and Lens.
- A performance report for free listings separate from ads.
- Direct integrations with PayPal for checkout linking, and with Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce to make feed setup simpler.
For a small retailer, the practical outcome is that a feed you may have abandoned because Shopping ads were too expensive now has value on its own.
Set up Merchant Center correctly
Web & Commerce · 2020
Most feed problems originate in account setup. Do these in order.
- Create the Merchant Center account at the business level, using an address and phone number that match your website's contact page.
- Verify and claim your website. Use the HTML tag, Google Analytics or Tag Manager method. The claimed URL must match the domain in your product links exactly, including https and www.
- Complete the business information tab: display name, logo, customer service contact and business address. Free listings show the store name, so make it the one customers know.
- Configure shipping and tax. Free listings require shipping settings for every product, and US sales tax settings for each state where you collect. Mismatches between the feed and the checkout are a leading cause of disapproval.
- Opt in to surfaces across Google under Growth, then Manage programs. Accept the terms. Without this step, nothing appears for free.
- Add the return and refund policy link, and make sure the policy on your site states how returns actually work.
Build a feed that passes review
Web & Commerce · 2020
Google requires a specific set of attributes, and free listings have the same requirements as paid Shopping. The minimum set:
| Attribute | Requirement | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| id, title, description | Unique id; title under 150 characters | Promotional text or ALL CAPS in titles |
| link, image_link | Live product URL on the claimed domain; image at least 100x100, no watermarks | Placeholder images, text overlays |
| price, availability | Must match the landing page exactly | Sale price in feed, regular price on site |
| brand, gtin or mpn | Required for most new products; identifier_exists if none | Missing GTINs on branded goods |
| condition, google_product_category | New, refurbished or used; Google's taxonomy | Wrong or generic category |
Apparel and variants also need color, size, gender, age_group and item_group_id. Add product_type for your own taxonomy; it helps reporting and later ad campaigns.
Write titles the way shoppers search. Brand, product, key attribute, size or color: "Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket Men's Navy Large" outperforms "Better Sweater". Put the most important words first, because titles truncate on mobile.
Keep price and availability in sync. Google crawls landing pages and compares them with the feed. If the page says out of stock and the feed says in stock, the product is disapproved. Automatic item updates in Merchant Center can correct minor mismatches, but a feed that refreshes daily, or in near real time through the Content API, is the real fix.
Use high-quality images on white or plain backgrounds for most categories. Lifestyle shots belong in additional_image_link.

Feed setup by platform
Web & Commerce · 2020
Shopify. Install the Google channel from the Shopify app store. It creates or links a Merchant Center account, syncs products automatically and surfaces errors inside Shopify. Fill in Google-specific fields such as GTIN, category and condition on each product. For large catalogs or complex variants, a feed app such as DataFeedWatch or GoDataFeed gives more control.
WooCommerce. Use the Google Listings and Ads path through WooCommerce.com's integration announced alongside the program, or a plugin such as Product Feed PRO. Map attributes carefully, because WooCommerce's default fields do not include GTIN or Google category.
BigCommerce. The built-in Google Shopping channel in the control panel handles verification, feed and sync. Confirm shipping and tax settings in Merchant Center separately.
Magento 2. Use the Google Shopping Feed extension from the marketplace or a feed management service. Magento's attribute flexibility is an advantage here, as long as someone owns the mapping.
Custom platforms. Generate a scheduled XML or TSV feed to Google's specification and submit it via scheduled fetch, or use the Content API for Shopping for real-time updates. The Content API is worth the engineering effort above a few thousand SKUs.
Keep listings live
Web & Commerce · 2020
Launch is not the finish. The Diagnostics tab in Merchant Center is where free listings survive or die.
- Check diagnostics weekly. Item-level disapprovals for price mismatch, missing attributes and image quality accumulate quietly.
- Watch for account-level warnings. Misrepresentation flags, usually triggered by missing contact details, unclear policies or inconsistent business information, can suspend every listing with a seven-day warning.
- Refresh the feed at least daily. Products expire after 30 days without a refresh.
- Track performance in the free listings report and in Google Analytics by tagging product URLs with a campaign parameter such as utm_source=google and utm_medium=organic_shopping, so the clicks are separable from paid Shopping and regular organic.
- Treat the feed as a marketing asset. Improving titles and images lifts both free and paid performance, and a healthy feed is the foundation of any Shopping campaigns you decide to run later.

Should you still pay for Shopping ads?
Web & Commerce · 2020
Free listings reduce the cost of being present, but the Shopping tab is a fraction of shopping-related search traffic. Product ads in the main results remain the volume driver. A sensible approach for a retailer in 2020:
- Get the free feed live and clean first, which costs only time.
- Measure free listing clicks and revenue for four to six weeks.
- Run Shopping campaigns on the products with the best free-listing conversion rates, where paid reach compounds proven demand.
- Use the same feed for both, so every feed improvement pays twice.
How Sigma Extreme approaches this
Web & Commerce · 2020
We treat product data as part of the commerce platform, not a marketing add-on. Discover: audit the catalog, platform, existing Merchant Center account and policy compliance. Plan: define the attribute mapping, title and image standards, feed refresh method and measurement setup, and decide where paid Shopping fits. Build: configure Merchant Center, implement the feed through the platform's channel, a feed tool or the Content API, and fix the website's policy and contact pages where they fall short. Improve: weekly diagnostics review, title and image testing, and expansion into paid campaigns on proven products. Feed work touches the storefront, the product content, growth campaigns and systems integration, so our brand, growth, web and technology teams work on it together.
How we've done it before
Web & Commerce · 2020
A representative engagement is our ecommerce work, where a retailer with a large and inconsistently described catalog had been disapproved repeatedly in Merchant Center. We rebuilt the attribute mapping, standardized titles and images, automated the feed refresh from the platform and brought the website's policies into compliance. The store went from almost no Shopping presence to a stable, fully approved feed that then became the basis for profitable Shopping campaigns.

Frequently asked
Are Google Shopping listings really free now?
In the US, yes for the Shopping tab. Google announced on April 21 that results on the Shopping tab will consist primarily of free listings, rolling out through the end of April. Paid Shopping ads still appear at the top and bottom of the tab and in the main search results. Google has said it plans to expand free listings globally later this year.
Do I need a Google Ads account to get free listings?
No. You need a Google Merchant Center account with a verified and claimed website, a product feed, and the surfaces across Google program enabled. Google Ads is only required if you also want to run paid Shopping campaigns, though linking the two is straightforward if you decide to.
How long does it take for free listings to appear?
Allow three to five business days for Google to review a new feed and up to a week for listings to appear once approved. New accounts also go through a website review that can take a few days. Disapprovals for missing attributes or policy issues reset the clock, so fix the feed before submitting it.
